Why City Council and About Ryan

Why Serve On City Council?

After living in Grimes for over 20 years, I want to get more hands-on in building a positive future  for all of us who are blessed to live here. Grimes has a history as a wonderful small town just outside Des Moines. I have enjoyed the fruits of this history and I want to help make its future even better.

I look forward to sitting on my porch years from now with my grandkids, relaxing after having a family reunion at Lions Park half a block away.

No dramatic goals or election promises, I just want to continue the amazing journey that Grimes has been on for the last 20 years and since it’s founding in 1881 as a small farming community.

Let me continue to represent you and continue to build that future that we all want from our great hometown, Grimes!

Ryan

Who I Am

Ryan Burger is an 18-year Grimes resident who loves life in this great little town. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, his parents moved their family to Iowa in 1983. Ryan graduated from Valley High School in 1990. He immediately pursued a business degree and graduated from ISU in 1994.

From 1986 to 2019, he was been self-employed with BC Productions, a media company that produces a trade magazine, web portal and the flagship national conference for the mobile DJ industry.

Formerly the owner of BCPDJs, he was known in town by many as “that DJ guy,” providing sound for events all over town, starting the very first summer he lived in Grimes.  Being involved in Governors Days, Lions Club, Kiwanis, Booster Club and more you will see he’s involved anywhere he can help.

He is currently a high school teacher in Perry at Perry High School.  He fell in love with the teaching profession after experiencing all that the DC-G School District did for his kids and thousands of others.

How is he experienced

Being self-employed has led him to a unique skillset over the last 30 years and a perspective that he understands how an organization or business should be run.  Through cooperation, negotiation and management of resources, he will work with the other city council members plus the mayor and city staff to make Grimes even better.

Over his first term serving he has enjoyed making Grimes a better place, with continued controlled growth through working with developers, residents and more to “make the world a better place for you and for me” – (Michael Jackson – Heal The World)

How is he in touch with Grimes

Simply he’s there, Ryan loves being involved in some form in many many things, and does it well.  City Council, Park and Rec Board and Public Health and Safety Board, a ton of DCG Sports events and all around town has him accessible to anyone most days.  And often at home (807 NE Park Street) you will see him sitting on his front or back deck, reading a book or relaxing talking with friends.

His family

Married to Rebecca for 28 years they have 5 kids that range in age from 25 down to 18.  Involved in the community through involvement with Crossroads Community Church, and Grimes Chamber and Economic Development plus DCG school activities.

His goal before the election is to meet every resident of Grimes and talk about what they want this city to be like in 5, 10 and 20 years from now.

My Beliefs

  • Grimes is the best place in the world to bring up a family.
  • Its positive small-town attitude that has handled its growth better than any other town in the area.
  • Skilled city leadership, from both elected officials and staff, is the main reason Grimes is doing great.
  • Grimes will continue to go the right direction right direction, as long as city leaders continue to have the right motives guiding their actions
  • There are many goals in place and more to be set for Grimes but it’s not my mission to make any changes to our services.
  • That only through continuing to be responsive to the needs of the community will we continue to grow in the right direction.
